Small Art, Big Skills

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES: Artists & Galleries

Our good friend over at Barn Boy Furniture turned us on to this one. Apparently, Dalton Ghetti has been sharpening his pencils better than we have, carving them into chains, tools, animals, hearts, and other common items. He probably seasons his eggs with graphite, too.

Reduce Reuse Reinterpret

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES: Artists & Galleries

Nick Georgiou, out of Queens, NY, tells stories using the written word.  Sort of, see.  His patches and clumps of newspaper are his three-dimensional brush strokes, and every one of these pieces feels like an explosion of potential energy.

His blog can be found at My Human Computer.

Enter the Rabbit Hole

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES: Misc

My friend Ray always has the choicest links, like this little number from YooouuuTuuube.com. It's important to note that this video is a loop. Let someone know what you're doing before you click this link. That way, if you're still sitting here in two hours, snotty and vibrating, your spotter can pry you away with a broom handle.

Do You Love JPGs?

I love JPGs. And JPG Magazine has a lot of them. The only trouble is, their magazine is a Flash pageflipper, so they might consider renaming to SWF Magazine. If your eyes just glazed, don't worry. I'm speaking Nerd. [Photo by Bhu Sullivan]

Everyone Gets Pink Eye

What better way to welcome Spring and symbolize the triumph of good over evil? This week India celebrates Holi, or the Festival of Colors. It basically combines mischief and bright colors with a giant water balloon and powder fight. Here are some photos taken during last year's Holi day.

How to Report the News

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES: Misc

Have you ever been watching the news and wondered how one news team is able to squeeze out so many stories in one day? Charlie Brooker has apparently found the machine that's responsible for delivering most of television news, and has explained the process step by step. It's like a hot dog factory, but with more sarcasm.

Geweldig!

A Very Large Drawing

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg

Here's an especially huge drawing by Joakim Dahlqvist, called "Podalida", given the Google Maps treatment here.

This would be fun to use for a Get Directions link. We're right next to the life-size chess. Can you find the sauna?

You = An eight foot hole

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES:

This is definitely not news, but I just came across it, and I found it pretty interesting. In 2007, artist Urs Fischer created an installation called "You" in the NY gallery Gavin Brown's Enterprise. "You" was essentially a crater dug into the floor of the gallery, 38 by 30 feet and eight feet deep, taking ten days and $250,000 to complete (while the landlord had no idea what was going on). The piece was purchased by Peter Brant for an undisclosed amount, and recreated under Fischer's supervision at Brant's gallery in Connecticut.

Sketch2Photo - Amazing

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES:

Pretty phenomenal: This is a system that takes user input in the form of a quick labeled sketch, searches the internet for appropriate images, clips them out using technology imported from 2018, and composites them together.

You want an elephant crushing a hot rod? You got it. You want a shark attacking a helicopter? And so on. It's wild.

OCTOBER TAKEOVER - 1: ALL YOUR BLOG ARE BELONG TO US

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES:

October is here, and while our other designers have been sleeping and drinking coffee and doing actual work, I have been planning this modest (but still pretty kickass) blog takeover, while staring into the fireplace and cackling maniacally. Enjoy!

Helvetica is as close to font royalty as a typeface can get. It's loved. It's loathed. But either way, it gets used. A lot. And abused. For those with an undying love for Helvetica, this video may not be appropriate. You'll watch it anyway, but I warned you.

OCTOBER TAKEOVER - 2: Harrowdown

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES:

During the past three decades, the music video has, in fits and starts, been elevated to the level of art. But only on rare occasions. I'm happy to know that people are still experimenting, confounding, and pushing the envelope when it comes to television commercials for music. Great song, great video, happy October!

Takeaway Shows

POSTED BY: Michael vandenBerg
CATEGORIES:

David's last post has inspired me to share this brilliant music stash. Since 2006, French independent filmmaker Vincent Moon (and his co-conspirators) have been capturing and posting unique performances by a slew of great musicians. My favorites out of these include Arcade Fire's elevator performance of Neon Bible - #41.1, and Yeasayer's beautiful disturbance with Tightrope - #87.2 (sorry Mme. Neighbor!). I can't promise I won't post this again, because heartblasting musicianship doesn't get much more fun than this.

“Everything you’ve learned in school as “obvious” becomes less and less obvious as you begin to study the universe. For example, there are no solids in the universe. There’s not even a suggestion of a solid. There are no absolute continuums. There are no surfaces. There are no straight lines.”

The Best Printer Jam

Our color printer here at iii doesn't always do what's expected. A lot of our prints come out funny (if at all) and some get routed to the mysterious Jam Section, where paper goes to jam.

But I have yet to hear our trusty printer channel Radiohead. For that, you'll want to point your browser to a great cover by James Houston, here. Enjoy.
